Climbing Sigiriya Rock can be a daunting task. There are 1,200 steps to climb, and it can take the average person one hour to ascend this impressive palace fortress.
Coming down of course is much easier, and it takes about 30 minutes for the average person to descend.
Whilst the site is open from 7.30 every morning, you may find it best to wait until afternoon before you take up the challenge. The reason is because of the sun. Climbing the rock is hard enough but when you have the sun shining down on you, you may think twice. At least in the afternoon, you get a reprise from the sun therefore making it more bearable.
The current cost of accessing Sigiriya Rock is 4,200 rupees for foreigners, and 500 rupees for locals.
