Uppuveli is 6 kms north of Trincomalee and is an engaging beach area famous for its water sports.
The Nilaveli Road is the coastal road that runs north out of Trincomalee, and small roads go off this main road in the direction of the beach. Most off the hotels and guest houses can be found in this area because of the proximity to the beach.
High season is July and August and many places get booked up very early on in the year. Book early if you wish to stay here during this time. November is their rainy season.
Whilst tourism is a major source of income, there are still many fishermen who make their living here. Some live in the huts alongside the beach in small communities which help each other when they haul the fish on to land. The beach is dotted with fishing boats, their nets and white floats.
There are many water sports centres in the area offering courses for scuba diving for all levels. A popular trip is a day out to Pigeon Island for snorkelling.
Another popular thing to do is to visit the Trincomalee War Cemetery which is found off the Nilaveli Road in Uppuveli. It is a place of peace and remembrance, honouring those that were killed in the Second World War irrespective of their creed or nationality. It is well kept and a beautiful place to visit.
With the influx of tourism there are more restaurants in the area than say Trincomalee. Walk along the beach and choose what catches your eye.
Uppuveli is about a 20 minutes tuktuk ride from Trincomalee bus station.
