Where is Sigiriya?
Sigiriya is located approximately 170 kilometres north-east of Colombo and around 150 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). The journey takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours by car. Climb the Famous Lion Rock Fortress
The highlight of any visit is climbing the incredible Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Built during the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa, the fortress sits dramatically on top of a massive granite rock. Visitors climb approximately 1,200 steps, passing ancient gardens, water fountains, caves and impressive stone staircases before reaching the summit. The panoramic views from the top stretch for miles across forests, lakes and villages, making the climb one of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding experiences.
Discover the Fascinating History of Sigiriya
Sigiriya was transformed into a royal palace by King Kashyapa after he seized the throne in 477 AD. According to legend, the king built his palace on top of the rock to protect himself from attack by his brother, the rightful heir to the throne. The fortress featured advanced engineering, sophisticated water gardens and luxurious royal residences that were centuries ahead of their time.
After the king’s death, Sigiriya became a Buddhist monastery and remained an important religious site for many centuries. Today, it stands as one of Asia’s greatest archaeological treasures.
