Jaffna, Sri Lanka

In the past to travel to Jaffna, Sri Lanka, you needed a special visa stamp in your passport. Since January 2015 this has now changed. Jaffna is now open for tourists full-time.

Being located in the very north of Sri Lanka, Northern Province is sometimes referred to as Sri Lanka’s Tamil country.

minidagobas of Kantharodai Viharaya JaffnaPreviously its visitors tended to be salesmen and distributors, but with the opening up of Jaffna, the town is slowly getting ready for the influx of tourists. Testimony to this is the construction work for new accommodation choices, and the conversion of homes into homestays.

The major attractions in the area include the Nallur Kovil temple, Jaffna Fort, the hot springs at Keerimalai , the Nilavari Bottomless Well and the mysterious mini dagobas of Kantharodai Viharaya. Day trips include a trip to Delft Island to see the wild horses.

The coastal beach of Casuarina Beach may not be to European standards but hopefully amenities will improve there soon.

Re-emerging from its past, Jaffna is getting ready.

When To Climb Sigiriya Rock

Sigiriya RockClimbing Sigiriya Rock can be a daunting task. There are 1,200 steps to climb, and it can take the average person one hour to ascend this impressive palace fortress.

Coming down of course is much easier, and it takes about 30 minutes for the average person to descend.

Whilst the site is open from 7.30 every morning, you may find it best to wait until afternoon before you take up the challenge. The reason is because of the sun. Climbing the rock is hard enough but when you have the sun shining down on you, you may think twice. At least in the afternoon, you get a reprise from the sun therefore making it more bearable.

The current cost of accessing Sigiriya Rock is 4,200 rupees for foreigners, and 500 rupees for locals.

If you want to find accommodation in Sigiriya, please click HERE. We open doors to some of the friendliest, unique and personal homestays and guest houses sourced especially for our guests.

Even cats knows it is good for you.

KLM resumes flights to Colombo

642367KLM resumes flights to Colombo after nearly 20 years

At the start of the 2016 winter schedule, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will resume direct services to Sri Lanka’s Colombo International Airport from October, the airline said in a statement last week.

The first flight to Colombo is scheduled to depart on Monday, 31 October 2016. This marks KLM’s return to Sri Lanka after an absence of almost 20 years.

KLM suspended service to the Sri Lankan capital (then served via Abu Dhabi) in 1997 as the war escalated.

Sri Lanka has been a safe and stable country since the civil war came to an end in 2009. Since then, the economy – tourism in particular – has grown exponentially. Sri Lanka’s per capita income doubled in the past ten years and the island is a popular tropical leisure destination for Europeans, the Amsterdam-based airline said.

Throughout the winter season, KLM will operate twice-weekly service to Colombo, departing from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on Mondays and Fridays, and returning from Colombo on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The flights will be operated with the latest addition to KLM’s intercontinental fleet: the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which has 30 seats in World Business Class, 48 seats in Economy Comfort and 216 seats in Economy Class.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long-range, mid-size widebody, twin-engine jet airliner developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Its variants seat 242 to 335 passengers in typical 3-class seating configurations. It is Boeing’s most fuel-efficient airliner and is a pioneering airliner with the use of composite materials as the primary material in the construction of its airframe. The 787 was designed to be 20% more fuel efficient than the Boeing 767, which it is intended to replace. The 787 Dreamliner’s distinguishing features include mostly electrical flight systems, swept wingtips, and noise-reducing chevrons on its engine nacelles. It shares a common type rating with the larger Boeing 777 to allow qualified pilots to operate both models.
