Baby Elephant Rescued from Storm Drain in Sri Lanka

baby elephant rescued from storm drainThe event of the saving of a baby elephant caught in a storm drain in Hambantota has reached world news.

From CBS news in USA to the BBC in the UK, the event has been broadcasted as a a story of animal interest.

Having fallen down a concrete storm drain, workers hammered their way at an interconnecting slab of concrete to widen the gap, before managing to pull the elephant to rescue.

We all wish the little beauty the best of health.

5% of Sri Lanka is Water

AnuradhapuraAmazing I know, but 5% of Sri Lanka is made up of rivers, lakes and tanks.

“Tanks” are man-made lakes, a bit like reservoirs.

No more is this visible than the area of Anuradhapura, where the former capital resorted to protect the water source in order to use it to irrigate the surrounding fields. In this way, the population of Anuradhapura could become self-sufficient on its neighbouring crops, especially rice. At the time, this was an amazing feat of engineering.

Examples of  “tanks” in this area include Basawkkulama Tank, Tissa Wewa and Nuwara Wewa. “Wewa” is sinhala for “lake”.

To explore these tanks, we have great places to stay in Anuradhapura:

Public photography etiquette in Sri Lanka

photographerThe colour and culture of Sri Lanka makes it a photographer’s paradise however there are a few things to consider before getting too snap happy.

Depends on where you plan to photograph, some sites require a permit which covers photography, filming, parking and entrance fee.

No photography of sensitive locations (inside and outside), inside of shopping malls and inside tea factories (outside OK). Be especially careful in Fort, Colombo (except on the beach). If local soldiers are standing guard, it probably shouldn’t be photographed.

Don’t rely on signs alone, as sometimes they are old or missing. For example, one end of a bridge may have a “No Photography” sign, but not the other. There have been instances where foreign nationals have been detained by the police after taking photographs of buildings or vehicles used by VIPs. These include numerous sites in central Colombo. Use of video and/or photography is prohibited near military bases and government buildings.
