Haputale

Haputale

Haputale is a city of Badulla District within the hill country region of Sri Lanka. The elevation is 1431 m from sea level. Haputale is encircled by hills coated with cloud forests and tea plantations.

Perched at the southern fringe of the Hill Country, the largely Tamil town of Haputale clings to a long, narrow mountain ridge with the land falling away steeply on both sides.

On a transparent day you’ll be able to view the south coast from this ridge, and at night the Hambantota lighthouse pulses in the distance. On a not-so-clear day, great swaths of mist cling magnetically to the hillsides. Either way, it’s a spectacular not to miss.

The run down town centre is a dust-covered ribbon of traffic, three-wheelers and small-scale commerce.

Trip To Horton Plains National Park

But take a brief walk and you’ll be rewarded with extraordinary views. The railway hugs one aspect of the ridge in an exceedingly minor triumph for 19th-century engineering.

Haputale could be a helpful base for visits to Horton Plains. Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and is covered by grassland and cloud forest.

This plateau at an altitude of 2,100–2,300 metres and is rich in biodiversity and many plant species are found here.
